This level of certification is for SAR personnel who function on SAR missions as field searchers and/or K9 Handlers.
K9: Area Air Scent Discrimination
An air scenting SAR dog is especially trained to locate the scent of any human in a specific area and close in on the source of the scent, and can do so from hundreds of meters away, in heavy bush or in the dark.
K9: Land and Water Human Remains Detection (HRD)
HRD dogs are trained to specifically find the odor of decomposing human remains. HRD dogs are trained to ignore live human scent and animal scent, and only indicate on human remains. These dogs can be used to find human remains related to crime scenes, old missing persons cases, and small scent sources. This includes buildings, vehicles, roadways, wilderness, shoreline and open water.
